A unique artist that literally creates his art from the stars.
Meet Matthew Samson, self -taught artist
born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada.
He's the exception.
Since 2011, Matthew has been creating sculptures and works on canvas from ancient meteorites, which contain the oldest known elements in the Universe- estimated to be more than 4 billion years old!!!
In simple terms, a meteorite is a rock that falls to Earth from space. When the object enters the Earth’s atmosphere, various factors happen, such as friction, pressure, and chemical interactions with the atmospheric gases, causing it to heat up and radiate energy and light.
Meteorites provide some of the only samples we have of other worlds in our solar system. Some meteorites contain tiny particles that existed before our sun. Everything has been manufactured inside of a star, including humans. It is the carbon in our DNA, the iron in our blood, and the calcium in our bones.
Matthew’s art evokes the cosmic dance we all experience on a daily basis as we bring forth the reckoning of life and death. His works enable us to witness our indisputable interconnection with the Universe through time, space, and matter.
Matthew explains ” It all began when I was walking my dogs. I had already begun incorporating works with raw materials such as marble dust, sand, and flowers when one night I happened to see a shooting star. At that moment, I realized “I want to use that” and so it began my ongoing love affair with this element the building blocks of life.
We all know it. There’s something mysterious yet familiar about our relationship with time. It seems we possess a biological imperative to return to the beginning to the primordial soup from which all creation arose.
Much the same, you’ll find a philosophy and a meaning behind his work that incorporates creation myths, cosmology, mysticism, poetry, and exploring quantum entanglement, thus creating one-of-a-kind sculptures mix media on canvas.
Whether working with objects or human figures Matthew’s art in a celebration of the continual birth and death of the stuff of the Universe.
